Our project of peacebuilding through democratic political education has evolved in Mali several times since 2004. Prior to 2012, we assumed that peacebuilding was primarily a matter of liberal state-building, and peace education could focus on discrete problems in development such as agricultural productivity and increased educational opportunity, not the more general problem of the ethics of development. However, after 2012 we focused on stories about kidnappings and complicity in war crimes inspired by testimony before the Malian Truth and Reconciliation Commission. We have reenacted them in video animations disseminated by Scientific Animations Without Borders via mobile phone apps. Since 2020, the latest stories are focused on the empowerment of marginalized youth and retold through photovoice.
