Meat consumption is progressively increasing to meet the dietary needs of a growing world population with increasing purchasing power, thus altering their dietary patterns. In addition, there is also a growing concern for environmental sustainability and animal welfare linked to food production. In this line, there is a widening sector of the population opposing certain conventional raw materials used in the feed industry, due to their lack of environmental sustainability and high production costs. Therefore, it is becoming necessary to look for new sources of protein to feed not only humans, but also animals. Particularly, soybean meal is the most widely used protein source in animal feed, both in ruminants and monogastrics, but the increase in its price together with the environmental problems related to its production has led to seek new alternatives to replace it in livestock production. Its cultivation causes serious deforestation problems worldwide, enormous water consumption, indiscriminate use of pesticides and chemical synthesis products, as well as an irrecoverable loss of biodiversity. Furthermore, most of its production takes place in the Americas, where genetically modified varieties are used, thereby making its use prohibitive in organic production systems, where it is even more important to look for alternative protein sources to avoid serious social, economic and ecological impacts. Among the alternative protein sources used in animal feed, insect meal is considered as a potential substitute for soybean meal, since it has a significant amount of unsaturated fats and high concentrations of vitamins, fiber and minerals. As an added value, its environmentally sustainable production stands out, given its low soil and water requirements, low carbon footprint and its relation with circular economy models. In addition, its production rate is high due to the short life cycle of insects and its production system is relatively simple. The EU recently authorized the use of processed animal protein derived from farmed insects in aquaculture production. This feed source, intended for the production of feed for farm animals different from fur animals, must meet a number of safety constraints that restrict the usable species to the following: black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens), common house fly (Musca domestica), mealworm (Tenebrio molitor), bed beetle (Alphitobius diaperinus), house cricket (Acheta domesticus), striped cricket (Gryllodes sigillatus) and bicolor cricket (Gryllus assimilis). In addition, insects are gaining commercial interest since the even more recent EU regulation of 2021, which allowed the use of insect meal in diets for poultry, pigs and fur animals, as well as aquaculture animals. Organic agriculture already uses insects as a biological control method to fight against different pests, which, added to their nutritional characteristics and the sustainable production, suggests a promising future for insects to be used in the rations of animals raised under the organic production regime.
