The European Union has always implemented linguistic policies aimed to preserve multilingualism, one of its pillars. Large amounts of resources have been devoted to ensure translation and interpretation. Nevertheless, English gradually enjoyed increasing importance as a procedural language to the extent of becoming almost a lingua franca, right before Brexit. We review, from an economic perspective, how linguistic policies could be affected in the post-Brexit EU, in which essentially only one percent of the population only speaks and writes English as native language.
