There are many advantages offered by ultrasound-guided thermal ablation techniques for the management of thyroid nodules. Although highly effective, they are nonetheless, limited by the risk of thermal spread and injury to adjacent, critical structures, and their susceptibility to the heat sink effect. This chapter reviews newer, non-thermal, ablative techniques that are emerging as potential alternatives that could potentially avoid these pitfalls, and exemplifies the continued evolution and advances for the field of interventional ablative techniques.

摘要

There are many advantages offered by ultrasound-guided thermal ablation techniques for the management of thyroid nodules. Although highly effective, they are nonetheless, limited by the risk of thermal spread and injury to adjacent, critical structures, and their susceptibility to the heat sink effect. This chapter reviews newer, non-thermal, ablative techniques that are emerging as potential alternatives that could potentially avoid these pitfalls, and exemplifies the continued evolution and advances for the field of interventional ablative techniques.
