This chapter, which chronicles the journey of establishing a private school for the arts in the multicultural city of Haifa, is based on two interviews with Amira Haiin, a Christian Arab Israeli who served as the headmistress of Al-Hiwar Arts Specialized Elementary School in Haifa from 2009 to 2017. The first interview was conducted by Ayala Bavli in 2018 and offers an ethnographic account derived from Haiin's experience and unique vision, outlining the pedagogical model she created and implemented, with a focus on the vital connection between the arts and education, particularly for underserved communities. Additionally, insights from conversations between Sigal Barkai and Amira Haiin from 2023–4 are incorporated. Barkai also provides introductory notes on Haifa and its distinct social position in Israel. Through Barkai’s edited interview content, Haiin offers a personal perspective on the school's transformation from an unsuccessful and struggling institution to a thriving center serving the Arab Christian-Muslim community in the lower district of Haifa. Despite significant challenges, the school has emerged as a successful educational institution. It constitutes a cornerstone for cooperation between Arabs and Jews in Haifa and its surroundings, fostering a sense of belief and optimism within the unique context of shared life in Israeli society.
