This chapter is based on Winner’s 2022 book, An Uneasy Guest in the Schoolhouse, which delineates the historical development of American art education and describes the key figures who contributed to the evolution of art education in the United States over the years. Here, Winner traces the evolution of American art education's objectives, shifting from utilitarian training to the cultivation of self-expression and ethical values. Dewey's progressive influence, she argues, facilitated a transition to child-centric and therapeutic approaches, later supplanted by Modernist and post-modernist perspectives. This chapter illustrates the profound influence of progressive American art education on its Israeli counterpart, which draws from both European and North American models. Similar to their American counterparts whom Winner describes, Israeli art educators now prioritize critical theory, social justice, and inclusive research methods.
