This chapter recounts the personal experiences of four art teachers who endured the October 7th, 2023 terrorist attack by Hamas on Negev communities in southwestern Israel (Gaza Envelope). Dorit Barchana Lorand presents their accounts of how their teaching was disrupted and their students scattered to shelters across Israel, and of their struggles to maintain connections with their students despite the conditions. Through semi-structured interviews, the teachers describe their psychological states following the traumatic event and their coping mechanisms in facing subsequent challenges. Each of the four narratives depicts a different coping style and support system, including beliefs and tools before and after the attack that enabled them to continue their lives and connect with students. This chapter was written while Israel is still amidst war, with 133 captives held in Gaza and students and teachers still living as displaced persons, unable to return to their homes and schools. It does not claim to provide scholarly-objective research but rather aims to portray real-time life conditions through direct, firsthand testimony.
