This chapter reflects on the book’s exploration of female intimacy across diverse literary, cultural, and historical contexts. It examines how female authors use representations of intimacy as both personal expressions and acts of resistance. The chapter addresses how institutions and societal forces often attempt to control or restrict women’s intimate lives, particularly for those marginalized by race, class, or colonial histories. By focussing on works that critique marriage, domesticity, and institutional abuses, the chapter argues that these writings challenge oppressive systems and position intimacy as a force for social transformation, merging the personal with the political.
