Neurodiversity
摘要
Taking a biopsychosocial approach to neurodiversity demonstrates how mental capacity cannot be standardised. It accepts neurological variations in mental capacities and advocates inclusivity. A need is seen to replace past medical approaches seeking biological causation to reduce ‘symptomatology’ with greater recognition of the wide-ranging neurodiverse characteristics often caused by intersecting social pressures on those from minority groups. Adjustments necessary during the Covid-19 pandemic, such as remote learning/working, and greater use of electronic modes of communication suited some of those with neurodiverse characteristics. However, they also suffered increased social isolation, especially older adults in long-term care. More research is required exploring the characteristics of autistic adults in later life and measures to improve social integration and adaptive functioning, particularly for those with degenerative, neurological conditions.
