Experiences in young adulthood are explored, including the need to consolidate a stable identity through intimate relationships, usually leading to the creation of a new family whilst establishing careers. The historical context of family life is examined, including legacies of industrialisation, world events, and transformations in women’s roles. Diversity within family forms is considered with regard to socioeconomic status, ethnic origin, same-sex parenting, blended families, and lone parenting of either sex. It is established that flexibility is required in parenting styles, due to the new digital revolution which offers both benefits and risks for families. There is now a need for families to adjust to a post-Covid era creating a greater need for joined up services and family-based therapies within health and social care.
