The historical context and evolution of traditional methods focuses on the importance of gaining complete understanding of the foundational approaches prior to integrating modern advancements. The chapter discusses the key approaches to rehabilitation such as behavioral therapy, cognitive retraining, physical and occupational therapy, and neuropsychological assessments. Behavioral therapy is discussed with a focus on behavior modification techniques, reinforcement, behavior shaping, and its applications in the recovery of lost functions and management of deficits in stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Repetition is emphasized in cognitive retraining for the restoration of memory and attentional functions along with the importance of standardizing tasks. Physical and occupational therapy integrates motor and functional rehabilitation to address deficits while neuropsychological assessments are used for tools such as WAIS-IV and MMSE to inform interventions. The strengths of these approaches are integrated with evidence-based efficacy, cost-effectiveness, and generalizability in the global diaspora. These traditional approaches while laying foundations for rehabilitation have gaps such as lacking personalization, slow progress, and inadequate integration of emotional and social needs as well as challenges in accessibility, specifically geographical limitation and caregiver burden. The chapter delves into the implementation of alternative measures to limit the increased reliance on therapists, to reduce financial burdens and to limit the variability in patient outcomes. The emergent need for holistic and adaptive approaches including the integration of technology to enhance engagement and improve outcomes is simultaneously discussed. This chapter acknowledges the importance of neurocognitive rehabilitation and the evolution of complex and diverse needs of each patient. This chapter acts as a pathfinder to approach the integration of advanced, integrative methods for technological interventions to maximize patient outcomes.
