Although our understanding of visual word recognition has been significantly advanced by numerous studiess demonstrating how various orthographic, phonological, and semantic variables affect it, most of the evidence relies on studies conducted using Roman alphabetic scripts. As a less-studied script, the Korean writing system possesses both alphabetic and syllabic characteristics. An examination of how these multifaceted characteristics influence lexical processing could provide a deeper understanding of the language-universal and language-specific mechanisms underlying visual word processing. The present chapter focuses on the role of syllables in visual word recognition in Korean and reviews selected studies employing various approaches that illustrate how syllabic saliency is manifested in visual word recognition in Korean.
