This chapter analyses the convergence of societal attitudes and the adoption of Extended Reality (XR) technologies, which include Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR), as novel instruments for furthering environmental consciousness. Given the increasing global environmental pressures, the chapter advocates for the urgent necessity to implement innovative educational approaches that successfully involve the public. Extended reality (XR) technology offers immersive experiences that have the potential to greatly change people's conceptions and engagements with environmental matters. The present study aims to evaluate the perceived relevance and effectiveness of XR technologies in environmental education by examining sociological aspects that impact their acceptance among different social groups. Integrating theories of technology adoption with environmental sociology, the study uncovers the influence of social norms, cultural values, and institutional support on attitudes towards the adoption of XR technology. Moreover, the capacity of XR to close knowledge disparities and motivate environmentally friendly actions among various demographics is investigated. Using case examples, this chapter highlights the potential and challenges of using XR for environmental education, emphasizing the need of inclusive and culturally sensitive approaches to improve its efficacy.
