From radical advancement in Extended Reality (XR) technologies, which build on top of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR), the transformative abilities shown here are immense for the future of environmental education. Alongside the increased global focus on environmental sustainability, new ways to link environmental awareness with practical action are very necessary. This chapter discusses some pivotal roles played by XR technologies in improving environmental education-a great way of offering students, as well as members of society at large, a chance to be involved through immersive, interactive experiences that no traditional education can provide on its own. By using XR, learners can virtually tour remote ecosystems, experience how climate change affects the environment, and witness degradation firsthand-by deepening a concept understanding in sustainability issues. XR enables virtual field trips to endangered habitats and fragile ecosystems that otherwise may not be accessible; for that reason, environmental concepts become tangible and memorable. Apart from this, gamification through XR platforms creates an engaging, enjoyable learning experience that inspires people to take on the adoption of sustainable behaviors. In addition, the article includes case studies that recount the successful rollout of XR through environmental curricula and references projects that focus on climate change, conservation, and biodiversity. Despite many such positives, challenges exist in its implementation, including huge upfront costs to offer XR, uneven access to technology, and some ethic-related issues. Going forward, this article canvases emerging trends of XR, namely AI integration and enhanced data visualization, which shall further transform environmental education. Therefore, the chance that XR could act as a global catalyst for environmental action is particularly high, especially given its ability to simulate real-time the phenomenon of the environment and to connect the learner with nature. A call is therefore made at the end of the chapter to integrate XR technologies with more general sustainability initiatives as potentially inspiring positive environmental change.

摘要
