American Synthetic Ammonia, 1920–1940

Luigi Casale’s[aut]Casale, Luigi synthetic ammonia process played a significant role in the development of the US synthetic ammonia industry. The manner in which this came about initially involvedDu Pont (E.I. Du Pont de Lemours)and Ammonia Casale Ammonia Casale’s creation of a company for the purpose of manufacturing ammonia on American soil. However, the company, Niagara Ammonia, founded in 1923, faced trading difficulties. Among the several reasons was the fact that US nitrogen demand was met through the availability of ammonium sulfateAmmonium sulfate; calcium cyanamideCalcium cyanamide; and imported Chilean nitrate. The Casale venture not only faced marketing problems but also a threat to Luigi Casale’s[aut]Casale, Luigi lead high-pressure patent in the US. The subsequent acquisition of Casale technology by Du Pont enabled the corporation to overcome major problems with its Claude synthetic ammonia processDu Pont (E.I. Du Pont de Lemours)Ammonia process. This was an important contribution to the growth of the US synthetic ammonia industry.
