This contribution is devoted to an analysis of the semiotic imprints of legal consciousness. It will explore the main instruments for semiotic signification of constitutional and constitutionally relevant meaning. These are forms of phenomena which I define in my recent book ‘Constitutional Semiotics. The Conceptual Foundations of a Constitutional Theory and Meta-Theory’ as forms of symbolic-imaginary, visual and performative constitutionalism. Thus, the contribution will be focused on constitutional consciousness as a specific form of legal consciousness. In that regard, the chapter will define constitutional consciousness and its main characteristics. In this contribution I will try to offer an outline of a semiotic theory of constitutional consciousness. It will identify the modes of production of constitutional consciousness and the main signifiers through which constitutional consciousness as a form of legal consciousness is revealed. The analysis will also offer an account of the functions of semiotic signification of constitutional and constitutionally relevant meaning for constitutional consciousness. The theoretical claims of the chapter will be substantiated by examples from the realms of constitutional texture and constitutionally relevant art and architecture thereby signifying key ideas of constitutionalism as a form of constitutional consciousness. The contribution will highlight the main reasons for the constitutionalization of certain forms of legal consciousness. It will demonstrate which factors for certain forms of legal consciousness are to be shaped to forms of symbolic-imaginary constitutionalism as normative ideologies, normative ideas, constitutional myths and mythologies, constitutional utopias, constitutional codes etc. Methodologically, the contribution will combine semiotic, epistemic, socio-legal and comparative approaches to legal—in this case constitutional—consciousness.
