In this chapter, we continue with the theme of variation in our laugh response begun in Chap. 6 . In addition to how we differentiate between normality, vulnerability, and deficiency, we also consider our immediate social environment. Laughter is communication and we invariably reflect upon those who may be on the receiving end of our messages. Is the individual or group whose status change is being assessed nearby us or currently absent? Are they members of our ingroup or an outgroup? Is their status much higher or lower than ours? What is their current emotional disposition and what is our relationship with them? Location and context influence our laughter in as well. Are we on familiar ground or in “enemy” territory? Are we at a funeral or birthday party? In a courtroom, a temple, or a karaoke bar? It may seem inconceivable that so many factors play a part in a response that often seems to instantaneously explode from within us, however we are constantly assessing numerous elements of our social environment. With the preestablished personal qualities discussed earlier, they can combine to either encourage or restrain our laughter.
