Delaware Big House and Irish Sweat Houses: Comparisons
摘要
This chapter brings together the numerous affinities, even similarities between the sauna cultures described so far. The sweat cultures are not identical, however, as there is always local and cultural variation of details. Here I explore what we can establish as the key elements and likely roots of the sweat institutions as a temenos particularly close to the heart and soul of women. Are we right to conclude that women were also honored in its symbolic language and were the matrix of the lifeways based on regeneration and cyclical rituals of return? In this chapter I also inspire other scholars to bring their own knowledge to the fore in the comparative spirit and to complement the data where my own knowledge is lacking. Comparative studies make us conscious of issues that otherwise would not enter into our boxed colonized minds. That is what happened to me with the Finnish sauna. I comment on how the comparative perspective led me to ask new questions regarding my own Finnish sauna culture. This is what I explore in more detail in the chapter on the Finnish sauna which, again, I weigh against the Delaware Big House and sweat lodge.
