‘If We Do Not Want a Man, We Do Not Take Him’, Eligibility, Recruitment and Retention
摘要
This chapter focuses upon recruitment and retention, considering who was employed by Remploy and the basis upon which this occurred. It explores the various barriers which prevented many disabled people from securing work with Remploy, and argues that the key factor in gaining and maintaining employment with the company was perceived individual productivity. The chapter highlights both central recruitment policy over the period and the local variations in practice. In so doing, the chapter adds Remploy to the current understanding of the exclusion of disabled people from the measures of the welfare state, and demonstrates that the achievement of full employment in the period was not extended to severely disabled people through sheltered employment.
