The emergence of the natural wine movement in South Africa remains an underexplored narrative. This movement’s local origins stem from a shift where winemakers, breaking free from the cooperative system, invested in neglected regions like the Swartland to experiment with innovative viticulture and winemaking techniques, diverging from conventional methods. While the roots of the movement can be traced to Swartland, South African natural winemakers also draw on global knowledge and narratives. This article retraces the factors that fostered the local natural wine movement and explores how it navigates the industry to establish a distinct identity and ensure commercial viability.
