Despite the global endorsement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), there has been a notable increase in environmental justice struggles across various regions. These struggles are not merely isolated instances of injustice; rather, they reflect interwoven systems of oppression that benefit a select few while imposing suffering on the majority and jeopardizing ecological integrity. This chapter aims to illuminate the often-overlooked social dimension of sustainability and its intrinsic connections to human rights and environmental justice. Through an examination of diverse case studies from around the globe, this chapter underscores the critical need to transcend the fragmentation present within these social movements. By doing so, we can formulate comprehensive solutions that advance justice and safeguard the planet’s ecosystems amid escalating economic and ecological crises.
