This chapter provides a phenomenological model for studying the dynamics of LLCs. The key ingredients of the model are (a) the Toner-Tu model for active matter, (b) the Landau-de Gennes model for nematic liquid crystals, and (c) an experimentally motivated coupling term that favors coalignment of the polarization in the active field and the nematic director. Extensive studies unfold two hitherto unobserved steady states: (i) chimeras, corresponding to bands of high orientational order coexisting with disorder; and (ii) solitons, corresponding to localized regions of order which are robust under collisions. The interplay of confinement and activity on the pattern dynamics is also studied, unraveling novel textures and tailored morphologies with potential technological applications.

摘要
