QR Code Scanning as a Highly Available Surrogate of NFC for Verifiable Presentation Exchange

Verifiable Credentials are going to be the next step in digitalization of identity and attribution of characteristics and the European Union has recently presented the eIDAS2.0 regulation. The most common way to provide a verifiable presentation for the attestation of an attribute (e.g., a Driver’s License) will be using an e-wallet on a mobile phone, however not every mobile phone is endowed with NFC technology and an Internet connection might both pose some security issues and not always be readily available. In this paper we analyze the feasibility of adopting the dynamic generation of QRcodes encoding a whole verifiable presentation and it’s scanning to provide a surrogate channel that is equivalent for physical security to the adoption of NFC. Every mobile phone today has a screen capable of showing a QRcode and a camera capable of scanning it, so such a solution would be universally available and would hence foster the general adoption and usage of digital Verifiable Credentials.
