Racist Aesthetics in Digital Extremist Communities
摘要
The new integration models promoted by the platformization of social life, resulting from the popularization of new communication technologies and digital social networks, have facilitated collective actions of the most diverse types, including extremist movements, which have gained new means of perpetuating and organizing themselves. In recent years, Telegram has become an open stage for the concentration of these groups. In order to understand the aesthetics of Brazilian radicalism and how it contributes to the perpetuation of violence, an analysis of the images circulated in extremist Telegram groups in April 2023 was carried out. For this purpose, a hybrid approach was adopted, combining big data techniques and aesthetic analysis, which brought the interdisciplinarity between data science, sociology, and semiotics to the debate. The results of this work seek to clarify how the opinions encouraged and expressed in radical digital communities contribute to the promotion of violence outside of digital media platforms.
