Loneliness of older people has been a topic of concern requiring targeted investigation. This unpleasant experience can negatively impact social connection with harmful effects on health and wellbeing, threatening healthy aging. Aging has brought demographic changes and challenges worldwide, requiring unique attention from health systems, with a special focus on self-care. Self-care is the intrinsic capacity of individuals, families and communities to promote and maintain health, prevent and management illness or disfunction. Therefore, self-care is a critical concept in old age regarding health behaviors as maintaining, monitoring and management or promoting a healthy and active aging. Limited information exists regarding loneliness among people over 65 years residents in long term care, namely how self-care models or interventions can contribute to it´s reduction. We aimed to examine which self-care models and interventions exist for people over 65 in long-term care that mitigate loneliness and elucidate gaps in knowledge on the subject that could contribute to future research.
