In this chapter I explore a single medical device, the slit lamp that has gained world-wide clinical acceptance by ophthalmologists and optometrists and is accepted as the most used medical device for the examination and the diagnosis of eye disease. Goldmann described the invention of an instrument designed for slit lamp photography with the capability of forming sharp images of a whole optical section of the eye. It is a wonderful tribute to the life and the work of Goldmann that he made so many contributions to the modern slit lamp that have revolutionized ophthalmology.
