Comparison of Construction Alternatives: Footings with Tie Beams vs. Footings with Strap Beams

Properly selecting the foundation technique is essential to ensure the stability and durability of structures in civil engineering. This study compares two standard configurations of foundations: Spread footings with tie beams and spread footings connected by strap beams. Three-dimensional models of both configurations were developed using SAP2000 structural analysis software developed by Computers and Structures, Inc. version 25.1.0, evaluating one-family dwellings in the canton of Portoviejo, province of Manabí, on a soil type D and in a type VI seismic zone with loading scenarios, both static and dynamic. The results indicate that footings connected by strap beams offer a more uniform load distribution and more significant structural rigidity, which is beneficial in soils with low load capacity and areas of high seismic activity. On the other hand, footings with tie beams demonstrated greater efficiency in the direct transfer of loads and less deformation on the story. From an economic perspective, footings with strap beams were initially less expensive. In contrast, footings with tie beams imply higher initial costs but are more efficient to have low periods of the structure. This study offers a practical guide for engineers, highlighting each method’s advantages and disadvantages, and recommends using advanced modeling and analysis tools, such as linear links in SAP2000, for effective linear elastic interaction modeling in structural connections.
