Expert System to Control Non-visible Water Leaks in Distribution Networks

Internationally, water flows represent an unreasonable average of 50% of the amount needed to meet the population’s water needs. This means significant economic losses and misuse of natural resources. On the other hand, it is estimated that there are 2 billion people in various nations with water supply problems. In Peru, 50 companies present problems associated with the loss of drinking water fluid; water leaks occur mainly due to problems associated with primary network pipes. Leak control presents low indicators regarding the efficiency of care. Consequently, operating costs increase. As a solution, a system has been developed with registration modules, cartographic identification, and validation, which was implemented in the area of control of non-visible leaks in the company Service de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado de Lima (SEDAPAL) for six months. Year 2022, to increase the operational efficiency of the leak control equipment and reduce the time for the detection and attention of reported leaks. As a result, the time was reduced from 3.40 h to 3.93 min, the quality of the service was improved, a significant reduction in costs and an increase in productivity was achieved due to a greater load of inspections per day due to having evaluations that generate self-learning that constantly improves the effectiveness and precision of possible leaks.
