The literature review provides a comprehensive overview of existing research work related to additive manufacturing, with a focus on Directed Energy Deposition (DED) technology and Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) process, in particular. It reviews the fundamentals of LMD process, including process modeling and control aspects. The chapter also discusses the DED process chain and presents a state-of-the-art review, highlighting key research activities and the available commercial software packages. The review examines various file formats, including STL and STEP, used for data preparation and data exchange in additive manufacturing process chain, emphasizing their relevance to the research focus.
