Policing agencies play a pivotal role in the ongoing fight against intimate partner violence (IPV) as they are critical first responders and have the authority to share their insight to enlighten the public. In recent years, however, the moral authority of American policing has been challenged by an array of concerning use-of-force incidents, some fatal. The most famous of these was the 2020 in-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Floyd, who was handcuffed and lying facedown, was asphyxiated by the actions of then-officer Derek Chauvin, who was ultimately convicted of murder. The searing images of Floyd’s death and his anguished, frantic cries for his mother prompted global protests against the excesses of policing (Reny & Newman, 2021). The contemporary police-community relationship and public perceptions of damaged trust are the main themes throughout the chapter, but we assert that there is no unassailable obstacle in terms of the police’s ability to share their IPV expertise with the public on appropriate social media platforms. While the bonds of trust between police and the community have been challenged, adroitly managed communication strategies and techniques will assist policing agencies to share their vital messages about intimate partner violence and save lives. Accordingly, it is important to examine the impediments to the positive public reception of police communications about IPV for the purpose of fully describing the challenges; at that point, policing agencies can then generate helpful solutions.
