The disturbing case of Alejandra Chub in Guatemala illustrates the often-callous, uniformed, sensationalistic, and explicitly cruel way contemporary social media users often treat the issue of intimate partner violence (IPV) and how the various platforms allow and enable such abuse. Alejandra was a young, impoverished, indigenous girl from a rural part of Guatemala who fell in love with an older, married man, Mario Tut (Beck & Mohamed, 2021). Almost immediately, Tut started to abuse Alejandra physically, psychologically, sexually, and emotionally, and she forged a close friendship with his wife because of their shared pain and torment at his hands. Tut’s wife reported him for his extreme abuse in 2017, but local authorities took no action (Beck & Mohamed, 2021).
