As a professor and researcher specializing in intimate partner violence (IPV) and as a survivor myself, I regularly discuss various aspects of IPV with both laypeople and professionals. However, I was unprepared for the virulent stereotypes of researchers in this field when I received a series of berating texts from a dear friend’s abusive partner. Unknown to me, he had hacked into her phone and discovered our exchanges, which included her recounting her abuse and my responses, which contained numerous articles on IPV and referrals to community resources.
