The purpose of this research was to examine the use of ambiguity in newspaper headlines, specifically focusing on the headlines of BBC and CNN. A qualitative and descriptive approach was employed to identify the different types of ambiguity present in the headlines. The data collection technique involved collecting news headlines from the online versions of BBC and CNN, resulting in a total of 13 headlines. To classify the ambiguity, the researcher utilized Kreidler’s theory (1998). The findings revealed that lexical ambiguity was the most prevalent type of ambiguity in the news headlines, with 11 out of the 13 headlines containing this type. Additionally, 5 headlines exhibited homonymy, while 6 headlines demonstrated polysemy. The remaining 2 headlines displayed syntactic ambiguity, specifically surface structure ambiguity.
