Hate speech is a type of speech that exists in society and is toxic or derogatory to a specific group or groups that suffer from some type of prejudice. This speech is often characterized by offensive remarks, malicious innuendos, hateful insults and expressions of contempt. Several scholars and activists have recognized that hate speech can negatively impact community dynamics, institutional interactions, and personal relationships. This research focuses on the role of technology in hate speech and the ways in which digital platforms can cause and exacerbate hate speech. In other words, this article examines the different types of digital hate speech and its consequences for society, as well as how technology contributes to its spread and facilitates its influence. This study used a descriptive analysis approach, including a systematic literature review of scientific articles, legal regulations, and expert opinions on technology and hate speech. Overwhelmingly, the findings indicate that we need a comprehensive, digitally-enabled strategy to mitigate the impact of hate speech and reduce its occurrence in society. The article states that responses to the threat of digital hate speech should include elements of legal responses, technological solutions and educational programs that will counteract the causes and effects of digital hate.
