Retinal detachment (RD) is the separation of the neurosensory retina from the underlying retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). RD can be classified into three groups based on the cause: rhegmatogenous, tractional, and exudative. In addition, proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) accompanies 5%–12% of cases of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) and is associated with poor prognosis. The incidence is approximately 12/100,000 annually and increases in the presence of high myopia (axial length >26 mm), aphakia, and pseudophakia.
