Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide and is responsible for severe visual impairment in approximately 2.6 million people. The most common cause of vision loss in the diabetic population is diabetic macular edema (DME), which manifests as a macular thickening and hard exudation. The prevalence of DME in the diabetic population ranges from 2.7% to 11%. Although it can be seen at every stage, the risk of DME increases with the severity of retinopathy. While the incidence is 3% in mild nonproliferative DR cases, it increases to 71% in proliferative DR.
