Epiretinal membrane (ERM) is a transparent, fibrocellular, avascular proliferation that develops on the retinal surface. It is a common pathology in adults over 50 years of age. In autopsy studies, the prevalence of ERM was reported to be 2% in people over 50 years of age and 20% of those over 75. Although 10% to 20% of patients may have bilateral ERM, involvement is usually asymmetrical. ERM is usually idiopathic but may also occur secondary to specific retinal pathologies. While patients with ERM are asymptomatic in the early stages, they may present with micropsia, macropsia, metamorphopsia, and impaired central vision in the later stages. Various studies in the literature have identified numerous risk factors, such as ethnicity, diabetes, and smoking. However, the most definite known risk factor for ERM is aging.
