All-Sky LST Anomaly Detection Associated to the Türkiye February 6th, 2023, Mw = 7.8, and Morocco September 9th, 2023, Mw = 6.8 Earthquakes

Earthquakes are natural disasters that cause numerous human casualties and material losses, and -although unavoidable, their effects can be mitigated if their occurrence is anticipated. In 2023, the most destructive earthquakes occurred in Turkiye (Mw = 7.8) and Morocco (Mw = 6.8) on February 6th and September 9th, respectively. Our previous works analyzed more than 30,000 land earthquakes and correlated them to the Land Surface Temperatures (LST) anomalies in neighbor pixels within a search radius from 50 to 500 km from the epicenters. In general, a small positive LST anomaly was detected 1 to 7 days before the seismic events. LST variations have been studied during nighttime (local time) between 0 and 6 am in this work to remove the effect of sunlight 1 week before the earthquakes. MSG All Sky (AS) products, notably MSG/SEVIRI and AQUA/AMSR-E, are used to fill the cloud gaps. Then, the LST data was ingested and processed, and LST anomalies were calculated seven days before and after the studied earthquake. A small positive 2 ºC LST anomaly was detected near the active faults in Syria-Türkiye two days before the earthquake, which decreased afterward. Similarly, in Haouz, Morocco, an LST increase of 2°C was observed near the active faults 3 days before the earthquake.
