The Termini Imerese–Bagheria region (Palermo, Sicily, Italy) shows an Upper Triassic–Oligocene rock succession typical of the Meso-Cenozoic pelagic basin-slope domain of the African margin, locally known as the Imerese Basin. It consists of thin-bedded deep-water carbonate-siliciclastic deposits with redeposited Jurassic–Eocene shallow-water carbonates. Its lower part consists of Upper Carnian–Norian pelagic deposits (Scillato Fm.) made up of evenly bedded to nodular Halobia-bearing micritic cherty calcilutites, interlayered with mm-thick marly bed. At the core of a faulted antiform, along the coast of Porticello–S. Elia (S. Flavia, Palermo) and Capo Zafferano (Bagheria, Palermo), a 160 m thick succession of whitish/grayish stratified and graded doloarenites with parallel and crossed laminations crops out, which in places alternates with thin layers of greenish dolosiltites or shows metric/plurimetric intercalations of light gray, whitish or pinkish massive dolomitic breccias. The paleoenvironmental interpretation of these lithofacies has been debated in the literature, even if the most recent data support the hypothesis of a basin-slope depositional environment. Indeed, the clast- and matrix-supported breccia consists of coarse angular/subangular lithoclasts. Clasts and grayish/reddish matrix appear pervasively dolomitized. These dolostones still preserve some of the original structures of the coarser facies: the original bioclastic fabric and the single clasts of the breccia. At the top of the succession (Cala dell’Osta locality) and below overlying Jurassic megadolorudites (Fanusi Fm., Upper Liassic), a polychrome terrigenous marl horizon, with intercalations of brownish calcilutites, crops out for a few meters (the real thickness is about 35 m in recent drilling surveys). In the new official Italian geological cartography (CARG project), an association of Lower Norian sporomorphs “indicative of slope environments” was recognized in the brownish calcilutites. New field surveys and facies analyses at this site suggest that the dolostones should be interpreted as proximal equivalents of the Scillato Fm. And that they are typical of slope-apron environments. They were emplaced by debris flows, breccias/megabreccias, and turbidites generated by collapse episodes of the contiguous unstable margin of a shelf locally known as the Panormide platform and controlled by extensional tectonics and, probably, relative sea-level falls.
