Geothermal Gradient and Heat Flux Maps of Algeria Using Bottom-Hole Temperature Measured in Oil and Gas Wells

The significant fluctuations in the geothermal gradient and heat flow in Algeria are a result of the continent's well-known tectonics, both crustal and mantle. To enhance our understanding of the geological factors contributing to local thermal anomalies and to provide a fresh assessment of Algeria's geothermal potential, the previous geothermal database was updated with more recent data from the oil and gas industry. Using empirical equations based on porosity and bottom-hole temperature (Tbht) data, over 57 new values of geothermal gradient and thermal conductivity have been calculated. These new numbers were combined with previously obtained data to construct geothermal gradient and heat flow maps. The findings of this study reveal that the entire territory exhibits a relatively high heat flow of more than 80 mWm−2 in various sedimentary basins in the southern part, including the Ahnet, Timimoun, Tindouf, Amiguid, and Illizi basins. In the far northwestern and northeastern regions, particularly in the Cheliff and Constantinois basins, there are strong correlations between the distribution of thermal springs and neotectonic activity.
