While few studies have examined the inclusion of sustainability and the visual aspects of peace journalism (PJ) in mainstream media coverage, this article aims to fill this gap. It explores the extent to which The Guardian applied visual PJ frames and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) in its coverage of the China–Taiwan conflict when tensions escalated in August 2022. The quantitative content analysis reveals that the majority of The Guardian’s coverage was dominated by war journalism frames (WJ) (72%), whereas PJ frames accounted for only 28%. In contrast, the application of the examined SDG frames [SDG-8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG-13 (Climate Action), and SDG-16 (Peace and Justice)] appeared to a significant degree (more than 50%), especially after the departure of former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, from Taipei. The study concludes that while applying sustainability frames is feasible in media coverage, they are still influenced by the political context on the ground.
