With over 3.6% of the country’s GDP coming from its extensive road network, India’s vast surface transport system, being one of the biggest in the world, significantly influences its economic infrastructure. In spite or because of its huge scale, the system faces many challenges such as rural connectivity gaps and severe urban congestion. To address these issues, the Indian government has, over the past two decades, implemented many major logistical infrastructure projects like the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), Bharatmala Pariyojana, and Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL). This paper examines the economic impacts of these initiatives, focusing on their influence on rural accessibility, freight efficiency, and overall logistics performance, by analyzing various macroeconomic indicators, government data, and annual reports of several logistics’ firms such as VRL Group and TCI Freight. This study strives to evaluates the role of surface transport in shaping India’s economic trajectory.
