Margareta Clausdotter was a Birgittine nun in Vadstena, Sweden, from 1440, and its abbess from 1473 until her death in 1486. During this time, she helped promote the canonization of Katarina of Vadstena, commissioned the translation of texts for the sisters’ convent, and initiated several literary works. Her greatest literary achievement was the composition of the so-called Chronicon de Sancta Birgitta, the family history of Saint Birgitta. The chronicle is mainly historical but contains several legendary episodes as well.
