Sugawara no Takasue no musume is the author of Sarashina nikki ( Sarashina Diary) from eleventh-century Japan. Sarashina nikki constitutes a major work of diary literature from the Heian period (794–1185). It is a memoir of its author’s life covering about 40 years from her childhood to old age and also includes about 80 poems. It provides an important historical source from which to learn the life of a middle-class woman in the Heian period. Sugawara no Takasue no musume is also considered to be the author of Yowa no Nezame ( The Tale of Nezame) and Hamamatsu Chūnagon monogatari ( The Tale of Hamamatsu Chūnagon).
