Philippa of Lancaster
摘要
Philippa of Lancaster (c. 1360–1415), a daughter of John of Gaunt, was the only English-born consort of Portuguese kings. Married in 1387 to João I (John I, 1357–1433), she was not only the mother of an illustrious offspring, but also one of the best-known and most successful queen-consorts of Portugal. Philippa carried out political duties, ruled her household and lands, and was hailed as a model woman. Educated in a culturally rich environment, Philippa had contact with Chaucer’s works and inspired poetry. The queen is also credited to have been the vehicle for transmitting Gower’s Confessio Amantis to Portugal.
