Magdalena Beutler was a Clarissan nun, who became known as a visionary, a reformer, and a writer. Her extravagant experiences and actions, including her miraculous disappearance and return as well as her failed attempt to prophecy her own death, resulted in a mixed reception among her contemporaries. She was considered a saint by some (including her own community) and a fraud or a heretic by others. She wrote vernacular devotional works that continued to be read until the seventeenth century. Beutler’s vita was rediscovered in the nineteenth century, but she and her works have only slowly started to arouse interest among scholars.
