The first English translation of Christine de Pizan’s Le livre des fais d’armes et de chevalerie was undertaken and printed by William Caxton in 1490 as The boke of fayttes of armes and chyvalrye. Christine was already well-known among royal and noble readers for her literature. Caxton’s efforts won her a broader audience that lasted for centuries. His translation helped to standardize spelling and expand English vocabulary. A modern edition of Caxton’s translation appeared in 1932, and a new English translation entitled The book of deeds of arms and of chivalry was published in 1999.
