Infanta Catarina of Portugal (1436–1463) was a daughter of the second generation of the Avis dynasty, known for its widespread praise and dedication to the art of writing. Born in 1436, her early childhood was likely lived in a period of turmoil, due to the political upheaval that followed her father’s untimely death in 1438 and the regency for her minor brother, King Afonso V. The turbulence led her mother, Queen Leonor, to flee the kingdom in 1440. Nonetheless, she likely received a formal education in line with the expectations of the time for noblewomen. At least one of her tutors is known—shared with her sister Joana, future queen consort of Castile—along with a few acquisitions for her tutoring. Single her whole life, Catarina lived near a monastery in her later years and is credited with translating Saint Lorenzo Giustiniani’s works from Latin into Portuguese. The text was printed a few decades after her demise crediting her authorship.
