The paucity of evidence for nuns’ legal literacy in early medieval England stems from issues of record keeping and inconsistencies in women’s legal agency in preconquest England. However, scholars can utilize the real-world needs and experiences of their lives as convent-dwellers to reconstruct likely forms of legal literacy. The land on which many nunneries were constructed was a valuable and often contested asset, requiring an understanding of property law and key legal documents for nuns to maintain ownership. As such, we can look to charters and foundation stories to gain insight into nuns’ legal literacy in preconquest England.
