Filipa de Almada (fl. 15th c.; d.1497) was a late medieval poet whose work was posthumously included in Garcia de Resende’s anthology of Portuguese verse, the Cancioniero Geral ( General Songbook), published in 1516. Although little of Almada’s work has reached contemporary audiences, her verses are evidence of a thoughtful, perceptive poet, who espoused protofeminist beliefs despite the limitations the women of her time were made to face. Almada was an active participant in literary debates and courtly poetic tournaments, engaging in literary exchanges and entering into poetic dialogues with other poets.
